The Historic old Post Office in the Johannesburg CBD.
2 December 2009. The historic 1897 Rissik Street post office building in the Johannesburg CBD caught fire at about 21:00 on November 1 2009. The neglect of the four-storey post office goes back the same number of years, to 1996, when post office officials vacated the building. The historic post office is the second to oldest building in the inner city, dating back 112 years to 1897. It was declared a national monument or heritage site in 1978. The post office was designed by President Paul Kruger's architect, Sytze Wierda, and is the only example of his work in the city. A risk assessor has stated that the fire was probably started accidentally by people taking shelter inside the building.Add to Lightbox Download
