Quartier 13 - The Children of Kinshasa

16 MARCH 2009, QUARTIER 13, Kinshasa, DRC. The Democratic republic of Congo is facing a national disaster. Almost half of all children do not go to school. Even more tragically, of those who do enter the class room, the completion rate for reaching grade five is about 50 per cent. The scenario is worse for girls, with only one in four girls who enroll in school completing grade five. The biggest problem is that the government does not subsidise school fees, thus with the financial difficulties that parents face, few children have the opportunity to attend school. These kids were playing in the streets of Quartier 13, a suburb of Kinshasa and none of them had attended school that morning.
