PMTCT and the use of Mentoring Mother (Mother2Mother) - The use of mentoring mothers is one of the exemplary practices that UNICEF in Lesotho is supporting to reach women with vital information of HIV and AIDS Mothers2Mothers (m2m) aims to have a positive impact on the reduction of the number of babies born with HIV as well as support and help women access medical care for themselves and their families. m2m uses education and empowerment as tools to prevent mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT) of HIV/AIDS during pregnancy, delivery and breastfeeding; combat stigma within families and communities; support a mother's adherence to medical treatment and reduce the likelihood of AIDS orphans. To achieve this m2m uses a peer-based model of care: that recruits and trains HIV positive mothers who have themselves gone through a PMTCT programme and they give other women in the same situation education and life skills.
