Child Labour in the DRC

Kipushi, DRC. March 2009. In a town that relied heavily on mining activity, it was devastating when state-owned Gecamine ceased operating in 1993 as a result of financial problems after 68 years of operations. Children and women were forced to break up stones in the discarded wastelands of the mines, to earn an income. Whole families earn a living from this kind of manual labour and some children never get to attend school.
