December 2009, Parakou, Benin. Foyer St Joseph is a Salesian sanctuary for children who have escaped the threat of exploitation, early marriage and trafficking. The centre was founded in 2006 in Parakou, Benin's second largest city. Sophie (13) was promised for marriage and when she refused, her older brother beat her up and threatened to kill her. She fled and after hiding in the bush for 3 days she sought help at a police station. She was then brought to the sanctuary and would probably not be reintegrated with her family because of the ongoing risk of forced marriage.
